Glucuronidation

Meaning

Glucuronidation is a critical Phase II detoxification pathway that involves the conjugation of various lipophilic, or fat-soluble, substances with glucuronic acid, a derivative of glucose, to make them water-soluble. This biochemical process is essential for the elimination of both endogenous compounds, such as excess hormones and bilirubin, and exogenous toxins, including certain drugs, from the body via urine or bile. Efficient glucuronidation is vital for maintaining hormonal balance and reducing toxic load in the clinical setting.
