Glucuronidated Estrogens

Meaning

Glucuronidated Estrogens are water-soluble metabolites formed when the liver conjugates active estrogen hormones, such as estradiol, with glucuronic acid. This conjugation process, known as glucuronidation, is a critical phase II detoxification pathway that renders the steroids inactive and prepares them for efficient excretion via the bile or urine. These conjugated forms represent a significant fraction of circulating estrogen metabolites and are commonly measured in urine or serum to assess overall estrogen clearance. The ratio of active to glucuronidated forms provides insight into the liver’s detoxification capacity.
