Glucose Transporters

Meaning

A family of integral membrane proteins responsible for the highly regulated movement of glucose across the lipid bilayer of cell membranes, a critical step for cellular energy metabolism and maintaining blood glucose homeostasis. These transporters, notably the GLUT family (facilitated diffusion) and the SGLT family (sodium-glucose cotransport), are differentially expressed across various tissues, reflecting the specific metabolic needs of each organ. Insulin signaling profoundly influences the translocation of GLUT4 transporters in muscle and fat cells.
