Glucose Transporter 4

Meaning

Glucose Transporter 4 (GLUT4) is a critical insulin-regulated protein responsible for facilitating the uptake of glucose from the bloodstream into fat cells (adipocytes) and muscle cells (skeletal and cardiac myocytes). Its presence on the cell surface is directly correlated with the body’s sensitivity to insulin and its ability to clear glucose efficiently. Dysregulation of GLUT4 trafficking is a central molecular feature of insulin resistance and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
