Glucose Disposal Rate

Meaning

Glucose Disposal Rate (GDR) quantifies the speed and efficiency with which peripheral tissues, primarily skeletal muscle and adipose tissue, uptake and utilize circulating glucose following a carbohydrate load. A high GDR signifies excellent insulin sensitivity and effective glucose clearance from the plasma. Conversely, a low GDR is a hallmark of insulin resistance and impaired metabolic flexibility. Clinical assessment of GDR is a sensitive indicator of pre-diabetic states and overall carbohydrate tolerance. We seek rapid and complete clearance of plasma glucose.
