Glucose Clearance Rate

Meaning

Glucose clearance rate is a precise physiological metric quantifying the speed at which circulating glucose is removed from the bloodstream by peripheral tissues, primarily skeletal muscle and adipose tissue, and metabolized or stored. This rate is a direct and dynamic indicator of whole-body insulin sensitivity and metabolic efficiency, reflecting the responsiveness of cellular glucose transporters to the pancreatic hormone insulin. A diminished rate is a clinical hallmark of insulin resistance and precedes the development of type 2 diabetes.
