Gluconeogenesis

Meaning

Gluconeogenesis is an essential anabolic metabolic pathway that facilitates the synthesis of new glucose molecules from non-carbohydrate precursors, primarily including lactate, glycerol, and glucogenic amino acids. This complex biochemical process occurs predominantly in the liver and, to a lesser degree, in the renal cortex. It is a critical survival mechanism, ensuring the maintenance of stable blood glucose concentrations (euglycemia) to supply obligate glucose-utilizing tissues like the brain during prolonged fasting or starvation.
