Glucocorticoid Withdrawal

Meaning

Glucocorticoid withdrawal is the collection of signs and symptoms that occur when exogenous glucocorticoid medication, such as prescribed prednisone or dexamethasone, is rapidly discontinued or the dosage is reduced too quickly after prolonged use. The body’s own adrenal glands, suppressed by the external steroid, fail to produce adequate cortisol, leading to a state of temporary adrenal insufficiency. Symptoms can range from fatigue and joint pain to potentially life-threatening hypotension and hypoglycemia. A gradual, clinically supervised tapering schedule is essential to allow the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to resume endogenous cortisol production.
