Glucocorticoid Suppression

Meaning

Glucocorticoid suppression is the clinical effect of inhibiting the normal, endogenous production and release of glucocorticoids, primarily cortisol, by the adrenal glands. This suppression is most often a direct consequence of prolonged or high-dose administration of exogenous corticosteroid medications, which inhibit the HPA axis via a potent negative feedback loop. Clinically, this state can lead to life-threatening adrenal insufficiency upon abrupt cessation of the exogenous steroid. Careful monitoring and a slow tapering protocol are essential to allow the natural hormonal axis to recover its function safely.
