Glucocorticoid-Mediated Suppression

Meaning

Glucocorticoid-mediated suppression describes the physiological process where elevated levels of glucocorticoid hormones, whether produced by the body or administered as medication, inhibit the normal function and output of specific biological systems. This often involves the negative feedback regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, reducing the production of corticotropin-releasing hormone and adrenocorticotropic hormone. It also encompasses the dampening of inflammatory and immune responses.
