Glucocorticoid Exposure

Meaning

The total systemic presence and biological activity of glucocorticoid hormones, primarily cortisol, acting upon target tissues over a given period, which can be endogenous (produced by the adrenal glands) or exogenous (administered as medication). Prolonged or excessive exposure fundamentally alters metabolic processes, suppresses the immune system, and modulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis through potent negative feedback. Clinical management often focuses on mitigating the catabolic and immunosuppressive effects of this significant exposure.
