GLP-1 Receptor

Meaning

The GLP-1 receptor, or Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor, is a cell surface protein that binds to the incretin hormone GLP-1, a key regulator of glucose homeostasis and appetite. Found predominantly on pancreatic beta cells, neurons, and other tissues, its activation is a central mechanism in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. Clinical interest in GLP-1 receptor agonists is significant due to their potent effects on stimulating insulin release in a glucose-dependent manner and slowing gastric emptying, leading to improved metabolic health and weight regulation.
