GLP-1 Axis

Meaning

The GLP-1 Axis refers to the complex enteroendocrine signaling pathway centered around Glucagon-like Peptide-1, an incretin hormone secreted primarily by L-cells in the distal small intestine and colon in response to nutrient ingestion. This axis is paramount in maintaining glucose homeostasis by stimulating insulin release and suppressing glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner. Beyond glucose regulation, it plays a significant role in central nervous system signaling to reduce appetite and slow gastric emptying, contributing substantially to body weight regulation.
