Glial Cells

Meaning

Glial cells are the non-neuronal cells within the central and peripheral nervous systems that provide essential support, protection, and nourishment to neurons. Unlike neurons, they do not generate action potentials but play critical roles in maintaining neural homeostasis, forming myelin, regulating synaptic function, and participating in immune responses within the nervous tissue. Various types exist, including astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglia, and ependymal cells in the central nervous system, along with Schwann cells and satellite cells in the peripheral nervous system.
