Gleason Score

Meaning

The Gleason Score is a critical pathological grading system used exclusively for classifying the cellular architecture of prostate cancer based on biopsy samples. It is a prognostic indicator, assigning a numerical grade from 1 to 5 to the two most prevalent glandular patterns observed in the tissue, reflecting their degree of differentiation from normal prostate tissue. The two primary pattern grades are summed to produce a final score ranging from 6 to 10, which correlates directly with the cancer’s aggressiveness and predicted clinical course.
