Glandular Proliferation

Meaning

The rapid increase in the number of cells that form the secretory or functional units of an endocrine or exocrine gland. This physiological process is typically a response to specific trophic hormone stimulation or local growth factors, leading to an enlargement of the gland and potentially increased hormone output. While a necessary process for normal growth and function, excessive or inappropriate proliferation is a clinical concern as it can be a precursor to benign or malignant pathology. Clinical assessment often involves imaging and biopsy to evaluate the extent of this cellular activity.
