GIP Receptor Agonist

Meaning

A GIP Receptor Agonist is a pharmacological agent that specifically binds to and activates the cellular receptor for Glucose-dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide (GIP), an incretin hormone released from the small intestine. GIP plays a crucial role in the enteroinsular axis, potently stimulating insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells in a glucose-dependent manner. These agonists are a novel class of therapeutics developed primarily for the management of type 2 diabetes and, increasingly, for weight management due to their dual effects on glucose homeostasis and central satiety regulation.
