GIP Receptor

Meaning

The GIP Receptor, or Glucose-dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide Receptor, is a G-protein coupled receptor primarily expressed on pancreatic beta cells, adipose tissue, and the brain. It is the molecular target for the incretin hormone GIP, mediating its effects on glucose homeostasis and energy metabolism. The receptor’s activation is critical for the “incretin effect,” which is the phenomenon of enhanced insulin secretion in response to oral glucose compared to intravenous glucose.
