GHSR-1a Receptor

Meaning

The GHSR-1a receptor, or Growth Hormone Secretagogue Receptor type 1a, is a G-protein coupled receptor predominantly expressed in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, acting as the primary binding site for the hormone ghrelin. This receptor is fundamentally involved in regulating energy homeostasis, stimulating appetite, and promoting the pulsatile release of growth hormone (GH) from the anterior pituitary. Its activation signals a state of energy deficit, initiating a cascade that mobilizes energy stores and stimulates anabolism. Pharmacological modulation of this receptor holds clinical relevance for managing growth disorders and metabolic dysregulation.
