GHS-R Downregulation

Meaning

GHS-R Downregulation refers to the decrease in the number or sensitivity of the Growth Hormone Secretagogue Receptor (GHS-R) on the surface of target cells, particularly in the pituitary gland. This reduction in receptor availability diminishes the responsiveness of the somatotroph cells to ghrelin and synthetic growth hormone secretagogues. Clinically, this process can lead to a blunted pulsatile release of growth hormone. It represents a form of cellular desensitization.
