GHRH-SST Balance

Meaning

The GHRH-SST Balance refers to the critical, dynamic equilibrium between Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone (GHRH) and Somatostatin (SST), two hypothalamic peptides that oppositely regulate the pulsatile secretion of Growth Hormone (GH) from the pituitary gland. GHRH stimulates GH release, promoting anabolism and growth, while SST inhibits it, serving as a brake to prevent over-secretion. Maintaining this precise balance is fundamental for healthy somatotropic axis function, impacting body composition, metabolism, and cellular repair. Imbalance leads to either GH deficiency or excess.
