Gestational Diabetes

Meaning

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a condition characterized by glucose intolerance with onset or first recognition during pregnancy, typically developing in the second or third trimester. This metabolic disorder arises when the body cannot produce enough insulin to counteract the increasing insulin resistance caused by placental hormones. Careful clinical management is essential as GDM poses risks for both the mother and the developing fetus, including complications like macrosomia and preeclampsia.
