Germline Epimutations

Meaning

Germline epimutations represent heritable modifications to gene expression that occur without altering the underlying DNA sequence itself. These changes, such as altered DNA methylation patterns or histone modifications, arise in the germ cells—sperm or egg—and possess the capacity to be transmitted across generations. Unlike genetic mutations, which involve changes to the DNA code, epimutations involve changes to the “packaging” or regulatory marks on the DNA, influencing how genes are read and expressed.
