Germ Cell Apoptosis

Meaning

Germ Cell Apoptosis is the process of programmed cell death specifically affecting the reproductive cells (spermatogonia in males, oocytes in females) within the gonads. This is a crucial physiological mechanism for quality control, eliminating damaged or genetically flawed germ cells and regulating the overall number of gametes produced. Hormonal imbalances, environmental toxins, or chemotherapy can pathologically accelerate this process, leading to impaired fertility.
