The collective term for the primary mechanisms by which steroid hormones, thyroid hormones, and other lipophilic signaling molecules influence cellular function by directly altering gene transcription and subsequent protein synthesis within the cell nucleus. These actions involve the modulation of specific target genes, leading to changes in the cell’s long-term physiological state, structure, and metabolic capacity. Unlike rapid, non-genomic effects, these processes typically exhibit a significant clinical latency period because they are dependent upon the synthesis of new functional proteins.
