Genioglossus Muscle

Meaning

The Genioglossus Muscle is the largest and most important extrinsic muscle of the tongue, originating from the inner surface of the mandible and fanning out into the body of the tongue and the hyoid bone. Its primary physiological function is to protrude the tongue and depress the central portion, actions that are absolutely crucial for the complex processes of swallowing and articulation. Significantly, it is the main muscle responsible for actively maintaining the patency of the upper airway during sleep. Its function is often a key anatomical factor implicated in the pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition with known hormonal influences.
