Gastroparesis

Meaning

Gastroparesis is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder characterized by delayed gastric emptying, meaning the stomach takes an abnormally long time to empty its contents into the small intestine, despite the absence of a mechanical obstruction. This condition arises from damage to the vagus nerve or the intrinsic muscles of the stomach, leading to impaired stomach motility and poor coordination of contractions. Patients often experience debilitating symptoms such as chronic nausea, vomiting, early satiety, and abdominal bloating, significantly impacting their quality of life and nutritional status.
