Gastrointestinal Tract

Meaning

The Gastrointestinal Tract, or GI tract, is the continuous, muscular tube extending from the mouth to the anus, responsible for the ingestion, digestion, and absorption of nutrients, as well as the elimination of waste products. It is far more than a simple conduit, serving as the largest endocrine organ, a major component of the immune system, and the host for the complex gut microbiome. Optimal function of the GI tract is non-negotiable for systemic health, impacting hormonal balance, immune tolerance, and neurological function via the gut-brain axis.
