Gastrointestinal Barrier Integrity

Meaning

Gastrointestinal Barrier Integrity refers to the structural and functional soundness of the intestinal lining, which acts as a critical semi-permeable boundary between the luminal contents and the systemic circulation. This integrity is maintained by tight junctions between epithelial cells, preventing the uncontrolled passage of undigested food particles, toxins, and microbial components into the bloodstream. Compromised integrity, often termed “leaky gut,” is a primary driver of systemic inflammation, immune dysregulation, and subsequent hormonal imbalance.
