Gastric Ph

Meaning

Gastric pH refers to the quantitative measure of acidity or alkalinity within the lumen of the stomach, which is primarily determined by the concentration of free hydrogen ions, and is typically maintained at a highly acidic level between 1.5 and 3.5 in a fasting state. This extremely low pH environment is physiologically essential for the activation of the digestive enzyme pepsin and for providing a critical innate barrier against ingested bacterial pathogens. Furthermore, optimal gastric pH is a crucial determinant of the dissolution rate and subsequent systemic absorption of numerous oral medications and essential micronutrients, including certain hormones or their precursors.
