Galectin-3

Meaning

Galectin-3 is a soluble beta-galactoside-binding lectin, a protein recognized for its affinity to specific sugar structures found on cell surfaces and within the extracellular matrix. It plays a role in various cellular processes, including cell adhesion, growth, differentiation, and programmed cell death. This protein is widely distributed throughout the body, present in the cytoplasm, nucleus, and extracellular environment of numerous cell types.
