GABAergic Inhibition

Meaning

GABAergic inhibition describes the process where gamma-aminobutyric acid, GABA, the central nervous system’s primary inhibitory neurotransmitter, reduces neuronal excitability. This action diminishes a neuron’s likelihood of firing an electrical impulse, effectively dampening neural activity. It is fundamental for maintaining neural balance and preventing overstimulation within the brain and spinal cord.
