GABAA Receptors

Meaning

GABAA receptors are a class of ligand-gated ion channels located in the central nervous system that respond to the binding of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. Activation of these receptors allows chloride ions to flow into the neuron, causing hyperpolarization and reducing neuronal excitability. These receptors are critical for regulating anxiety, sleep, sedation, and muscle relaxation, making them a significant pharmacological target.
