GABA-A Receptor

Meaning

The GABA-A Receptor is a ligand-gated ion channel protein found predominantly in the central nervous system, serving as the primary mediator of fast inhibitory neurotransmission. Its activation results in an influx of chloride ions, causing hyperpolarization of the neuron and decreasing its excitability. Modulation of this receptor is a key target for many anxiolytic and sedative pharmacological agents.
