GABA-A Receptor

Meaning

The GABA-A Receptor is a major ligand-gated ion channel located in the central nervous system that mediates the inhibitory effects of the neurotransmitter Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid. When activated, this receptor permits the influx of chloride ions into the neuron, which hyperpolarizes the cell membrane and reduces neuronal excitability. Clinically, it is a primary target for anxiolytic, sedative, and anticonvulsant medications.
