G Protein-Coupled Receptor

Meaning

A G Protein-Coupled Receptor, or GPCR, is a vital cell surface receptor that detects external stimuli and transmits these signals into the cell’s interior. These receptors possess seven transmembrane helices and are structurally coupled to guanine nucleotide-binding proteins, known as G proteins. Their primary function involves binding a specific ligand, which then triggers a cascade of intracellular events, effectively translating an extracellular message into a cellular response.
