FUT2 Gene

Meaning

The FUT2 gene, or Fucosyltransferase 2 gene, provides instructions for making an enzyme that determines an individual’s “secretor status,” influencing the presence of specific ABO blood group antigens in body fluids, including saliva, mucus, and breast milk. Polymorphisms in this gene are clinically significant in hormonal health because secretor status impacts the composition of the gut microbiome, which in turn modulates the enterohepatic circulation and metabolic clearance of steroid hormones like estrogen. Genetic variations in FUT2 can therefore contribute to inter-individual differences in hormonal balance and susceptibility to certain conditions.
