FUT2 Gene

Meaning

The FUT2 gene encodes fucosyltransferase 2, an enzyme responsible for adding a fucose sugar to precursor molecules, primarily on the surface of epithelial cells. This process generates the H antigen, which is a foundational structure for ABO blood group antigens and other secretor-associated glycans. Its primary function is to determine an individual’s secretor status, influencing the presence of these carbohydrate structures in bodily secretions like saliva, tears, and mucus.
