Functional Overreaching

Meaning

Functional Overreaching (FOR) is a planned and temporary state of intensified training load that results in a short-term decrement in athletic performance, lasting from a few days up to two weeks. Crucially, this fatigue is reversible and, following an adequate period of recovery, leads to a supercompensation effect where the athlete’s performance capacity surpasses the initial baseline. It is a necessary and controlled phase of periodized training, intentionally pushing the body’s adaptive limits without causing long-term maladaptation.
