Functional Male Hypogonadism

Meaning

Functional male hypogonadism describes a state where the testes produce insufficient testosterone, not due to primary testicular damage, but as a consequence of systemic factors or disruptions in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. This condition signifies a reversible suppression of testicular function, often in response to underlying physiological stressors rather than inherent testicular failure. It is distinct from primary hypogonadism, where the testes themselves are unable to produce adequate testosterone.
