Functional Inertia refers to the inherent tendency of a biological system, particularly the endocrine and metabolic networks, to resist change and maintain its current state of operation, whether that state is optimal or suboptimal. In a state of chronic dysfunction, this inertia is a clinical challenge, making therapeutic shifts difficult and requiring significant, sustained intervention to overcome. Conversely, once a state of optimal health is established, positive functional inertia helps maintain that superior equilibrium. Understanding this resistance is crucial for protocol design.
