Functional Hypothalamic Hypogonadism

Meaning

Functional Hypothalamic Hypogonadism (FHH) is a condition characterized by impaired pulsatile gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion from the hypothalamus, leading to reduced luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) production by the pituitary gland, and consequently, decreased sex hormone synthesis, specifically estradiol in females and testosterone in males, by the gonads. This represents a form of central hypogonadism not due to structural damage but often linked to energetic or physiological stress.
