Functional Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism

Meaning

Functional Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism (FHH) describes a reversible clinical state of insufficient sex hormone production. It stems from functional suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, without structural damage to the hypothalamus or pituitary gland. This condition results from impaired pulsatile gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion, leading to reduced luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels, which subsequently diminishes gonadal steroidogenesis.
