Functional Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism

Meaning

Functional Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism (FHH) is a reversible neuroendocrine condition characterized by suppressed secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus, leading to low pituitary gonadotropins (LH and FSH) and consequently low levels of sex steroids. This state is considered an adaptive physiological response to significant systemic stressors, such as severe caloric restriction, excessive exercise, or intense psychological duress, and is not caused by permanent structural damage to the pituitary or hypothalamus. It represents a protective shutdown of the reproductive axis to conserve energy.
