Functional Hypogonadism

Meaning

Functional Hypogonadism is a clinical syndrome defined by a decrease in sex hormone production, such as testosterone or estrogen, that is not due to primary gonadal failure or structural damage to the pituitary or hypothalamus. This condition is often reversible and is typically caused by external physiological stressors, including chronic caloric restriction, excessive exercise, severe illness, or significant psychological stress. It represents a state of central hormonal suppression, reflecting the body’s attempt to conserve energy during periods of perceived threat or resource scarcity.
