Functional Damage

Meaning

Functional damage describes an impairment in the operational capacity, efficiency, or output of a biological system, organ, or tissue that occurs without significant or readily observable structural alteration. This type of pathology impacts the physiological performance of the system, such as a deficit in hormone synthesis or neurotransmitter release, rather than the physical integrity of the cells. It represents a state where the system’s ability to perform its designed tasks is compromised, often preceding eventual structural breakdown.
