Functional Brain Connectivity

Meaning

Functional Brain Connectivity refers to the statistical and temporal synchronization of neuronal activity between spatially separated brain regions, which indicates a shared involvement in specific cognitive or emotional processing networks. This connectivity is a dynamic measure of how the brain’s different components communicate and cooperate to execute complex functions, such as mood regulation, memory, and executive function. Importantly, the strength and pattern of this neural communication are known to be significantly modulated by fluctuations in systemic hormonal levels, particularly the sex steroids.
