Functional Biological Reserve

Meaning

The quantifiable capacity of an organ system or the entire organism to maintain function and recover from a physiological challenge or stressor, such as illness, injury, or extreme exertion. This reserve represents the excess capacity built into biological systems beyond the minimal requirements for daily survival. A high Functional Biological Reserve is a hallmark of youth and healthspan, allowing for rapid and complete recovery from insults. Age-related decline in this reserve is a primary driver of frailty and increased vulnerability to chronic disease.
