Fuel Substrate Switching

Meaning

The inherent physiological capacity of a cell, tissue, or the entire organism to rapidly and efficiently transition between utilizing different energy sources, primarily glucose and fatty acids, for adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production. This metabolic flexibility is a hallmark of robust health and is largely regulated by insulin sensitivity and mitochondrial function. Impaired substrate switching, often termed metabolic inflexibility, is a core feature of insulin resistance and many age-related chronic conditions.
