Fructose Metabolism

Meaning

Fructose Metabolism is the collective set of biochemical pathways governing the processing, utilization, and storage of the simple sugar fructose, a common component of sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup. Unlike glucose, which is metabolized widely, fructose is predominantly processed in the liver, leading to unique metabolic outcomes. Excessive intake is clinically associated with a rapid increase in de novo lipogenesis, contributing significantly to hepatic steatosis, dyslipidemia, and systemic insulin resistance.
