Fructosamine

Meaning

Fructosamine is a collective term for glycated serum proteins, predominantly glycated albumin, which are formed through the non-enzymatic bonding of glucose to the amino groups of circulating proteins. Clinically, the measurement of fructosamine provides an estimate of average blood glucose control over the preceding two to three weeks, offering a shorter-term snapshot of glycemic status than the traditional three-month hemoglobin A1c test. It is a valuable biomarker for monitoring acute changes in metabolic control.
