Free Triiodothyronine (free T3)

Meaning

Free Triiodothyronine, or free T3, is the unbound and consequently biologically active fraction of the potent thyroid hormone Triiodothyronine (T3) circulating in the blood. T3 is significantly more metabolically active than T4 and is recognized as the primary effector thyroid hormone at the cellular level, directly responsible for regulating metabolism. Clinically assessing free T3 provides the most direct and accurate window into the body’s actual utilization of thyroid hormone for energy and overall wellness.
